KYDON S.C. Blue Star
Ferries CHANIA

CHESS DEPARTMENT
Kydon S.C.'s chess departement has emerged as the top
force in Greece during the past few years. Kydon has won
the domestic National Championship and National Cup
competitions in 2000, 2001 and 2002. This year Kydon has
already clinched the National Championship title and is
qualified to the quarter-finals of the National Cup.
Kydon won it's first chess title
in 2000 at the Peace & Friendship Stadium in Piraeus. With 12
points, the Cretan club tied in first place with the
Macedonia/Thrace Public Power Company, but won the title as the
winner of the match between the two teams. The Thessaloniki C.U.
was third with 11 points. In the Cup final, also at the Peace &
Friendship Stadium, Kydon defeated Kavala Chess Club in a
hard-fought match. The two teams were tied 2-2 after the regular
match and two tie-break rematches, but eventually won the third
rematch 4-0 to clinch the title.
Kydon
repeated its success in 2001 at the Peace & Friendship Stadium,
amassing 16 points to better the Thessaloniki C.U. (14 pts) and
the Korydallos (a Piraeus suburb) Chess Club (12 pts). In the Cup
final, held at Levidi, Arcadia, in central Peloponnese, Kydon took
on the Mati (Attica) N.S.C. and won 3-1 to clinch the second
successive "double."
It
was in the Kallithea resort of Chalkidiki, in Macedonia, that
Kydon won its third National Championship title, in 2002, with 16
points. Kydon was followed by the Macedonia/Thrace Public Power
Company (14 pts) and OAA Herakleion Crete (12 pts). The Cup final
was played in Athens, where Kydon defeated the strong team of
Kavala Chess Club 2½-1½ for its third
successive "double."
Playing
once more in Kallithea, Chalkidiki, Kydon won the 2003 National
Championship with 13 points in the final phase, scoring 8
victories (two of which in pool play) and one tie.
These impressive
successes of Kydon are due to its excellent players, as well as
the sound organisation of the chess department. The chess
department of Kydon offers instruction to beginners and more
advanced players, with over 120 boys and girls receiving advice
from top instructors. Amongst these are Zahari Zahariev (a
Bulgarian International Master and chess coach), Christos
Konstantinidis and Costas Emmanoulidis.
